Las primeras dias

ain’t no such thing as traffic laws here
I’m still adjusting to the change of altitude, I’m about a mile closer to the sky here. I’ve settled in with my host family. They’re one hell of a cute old couple: Silvia Y Francisco, but they call each other Gordita y Flaco. They have a very welcoming feel about them, and really enjoy conversation. Francisco especially likes talking in an existential manner laying out his thoughts on what it means to be an older gentleman and how one should keep occupied. The fourteen year old grandson, Arturo lives here as well. He’s a solid kid who has an old spirit about him. There’s another exchange student living here from Indianapolis. He’s only here for a month and since Silvia has a policy of no English in the house between two Americans, he’s under the impression that I’m a nephew in town from Monterrey.
I’ve been in Puebla exactly 48 hours and I’ve already experienced quite a bit. I’ve made friends with the exchange students here, which seems to be a natural occurrence among foreigners; you stick together. Fortunately though we only speak Spanish to each other since that’s really the only language we have in common. There’s a guy from Tijuana, a girl from the Basque region of Spain, and a fella from north Germany. We make a pretty eclectic bunch I suppose. We been guided around the city by the guy who works at the apple store on campus.

in front of the Church and ex Monastery of San Francisco. Inside are the mummified remains of Saint Sebastian de Aparicio. I remember hearing about this guy in catechism class back in my days of being a practicing catholic. There’s a catholic church on nearly every corner in the down town area. In nearby Cholula, where I had my first drunken night in Mexico, they say there are 365 churches, one for every day of the year.
This city is even more decadent than I remember reading and the colonial architecture is more inspiring than I thought possible.
since it takes forever to load pictures this way, I’ll probably put them in a different post.
